Familiars, Monitoring Spirits & How to Protect Yourself from Them
I was watching my friend Prophet Steven Haliburton’s Instagram Live last night and toward the end, he began praying against monitoring spirits. Afterward, I shot him a voice note of a recent experience with monitoring spirits which inspired this post. Monitoring Spirits are very real and they take on many forms. I have a 6+ hour masterclass on monitoring spirits where we delve into the many types and devices of monitoring. However, today, we will emphasize what I feel is a lesser-discussed aspect of monitors: familiars from the insect and animal kingdoms.
MOTHS
Recently, in a deliverance session with my brother, Apostle Chazdon Strickland, I got a word about a local coven taking an interest in me. (Obviously not a good thing. 😬) As many of you know by my social media habits, I’m a night owl who keeps vampire hours LOL. As such, I can often be found up cooking in the middle of the night.
Just above my kitchen sink is a window that overlooks the backyard. And understandably, with the light shining in the darkness, bugs often alight and chill on that window while I cook. They would stay pretty much the whole time I was in the kitchen.
Not long after receiving this word of knowledge, I noticed a HUGE moth on the window the next time I was cooking at night. I’ve been in this home for almost 3 years and have thought nothing of this before. But this time, I said, “If you’re a monitoring spirit, fall down and die in the name of Jesus!” It didn’t fall down or die to my knowledge, but it did appear to fly away and didn’t return for the rest of the night.
The next time I was cooking at night, I saw a huge moth again. Not sure if it was the same one. I repeated the command. It flew away again and never returned that night. And you know what? Ever since, that window has been free of moths and bugs in general.
I like to assess the practical first when it comes to supernatural phenomena just in case (1 Cor. 15:46), so I googled the habits of bugs as the weather gets colder in Georgia, and it would seem that “termites, cockroaches, centipedes, fleas, moths, and spiders will all seek refuge in your home during the winter,” so by that standard, the bugs should still be clamouring to get in the house—or window. Guess they were monitoring spirits! #GoodRiddance
SEEING THINGS 🕷🪳🦟
In the Spring of this year (around March, I believe) for about a day and half, I noticed that I kept seeing what appeared to be insects out of the corner of my eye throughout my bedroom. Yet when I would look in that direction, nothing was there. This had not happened to me before and I do not have poor eyesight. It so perturbed me that I asked a fellow prophet about it. I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t seeing things, but she said exactly what I was thinking: MONITORING SPIRITS. I prayed, rebuked it, and it stopped.
CRITTERS 🐈⬛🦎🦉
I know of others who have had similar experiences with lizards, cats, birds, and so on. They’ll be in a time of intense warfare and at a critical juncture, the critter will appear or they will notice what they had not noticed before.
It may be a cat that comes to sit and watch you every day.
It may be an unkindness (flock of ravens) or a murder (flock of crows) that is posted in the same tree every day perfectly in the line of vision of your home.
It may be an owl you hear at the witching hour every night.
It may be that a lizard or snake constantly finds its way into your home when you’ve never had this issue before.
It may even be an infestation that arrives out of nowhere.
Please note that life does happen. Sometimes a housefly, raven, or rat snake is just that. No sorcery or divination behind it. We must be balanced in our discernment and not assume everything has a spiritual meaning. No need for you to sound like the mentally disturbed lady who would call a prayer line I used to work at around 5am like clockwork raving about birds who were sent into her house by a witch. Balance matters, but when you notice a phenomenon or pattern that defies normality and practicality, THEN we must sit up, take notice, and make a spiritual assessment.
FAMILIARS & OTHER SYMBOLS OF WITCHCRAFT (A BRIEF HISTORY)
First, let’s break down the difference between a familiar and a familiar spirit. They are often connected, yet not the same.
Familiar Spirit - a demon that familiarizes itself with people, places, and things. It may be ancestral/generational, regional/territorial, or personal.
Familiar - an animal (bird, reptile, insect, etc.) that is controlled or possessed by [the spirit of] a witch/wizard/warlock with the purpose of monitoring or even causing mischief, intimidation, spell-casting, etc.
During the rise of witch hunts in Europe and America, practitioners of witchcraft were generally thought to be women and the objects and beings that frequented the women’s home were often associated with the alleged witchcraft.
🥘 The cauldron used to cook the family’s food or perhaps wash clothes became an instrument of conjuring and spell-casting.
🌿 The poultices used to bring practical, medicinal healing even referenced by Scripture (Isa. 38:21) were strictly seen as instruments of curses and enchantment.
🧹 The broom used to sweep the house clean became a symbol of astral-projection a.k.a. soul travel a.k.a. demonic out-of-body experiences.
🐈⬛ And the domesticated house cat (especially black cats), typically distinguished as pets of the fairer sex, became the poster child for familiars—real and imagined—everywhere.
Yet like the other items, while there were MANY false accusations (ironically done by those operating in the spirit of witchcraft, if not the actual practice), there is also great truth to these beliefs DEPENDING on the circumstances and the particular witch we’re discussing.
🥘 Cauldron magick is a very real thing even used by modern witches of certain persuasions such as Santeria and Wicca. (This may be a perversion of Jeremiah 1:13-16.)
🌿 Poultices are regularly employed in white magick, black magick, and green magick (i.e. kitchen witches, house witches, hedge witches, and herbalists) in particular.
🧹 Witches (some) can indeed fly on brooms and astral-project in general as well as remotely monitor. Just ask my spiritual father and best friend’s mom who are eyewitnesses!
🐈⬛ And yes, animals of all sorts can be used as familiars for the witch or coven’s purposes.
🚨 It’s also worth mentioning that dead animals found on your property can also be not just a sign that someone is watching you, but that intimidation (e.g. the dead pets in the new Netflix series The Watcher) or a literal warning (possibly a portent of death) is intended. It is often evidence of a ritual that was done against you. This is frequently the case when a dead cockerel is found in your yard or on your doorstep.
Also, if a familiar was taking on a corporeal (non-human) form and you prayed against it, finding the dead body of that familiar on your property would also be normal and a potential sign of victory over your enemy or at least over that specific tactic of the enemy. This can also happen to an unrepentant witch when judgment hits them, except it will typically not be on your property, thank goodness! That would be awkward to explain to the police!
So if you’re noticing surveilling patterns from the insect, raptor, reptile, animal, etc. kingdoms, then warfare—fire prayers—is in order.
YOU ARE NOT CRAZY. This really does happen. You’re not the first person it’s happened to and you won’t be the last. But you can take authority and dominion over these witchcraft tactics in the name of Jesus!

1. PRAY.
War. Rebuke. Decree. Do not take this lying down. EVERYTHING above the earth, on the earth, and below the earth MUST bow to the name of Jesus.
Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. — Philippians 2:9-11 NKJV
And this she did for many days. But Paul, greatly annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I command you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And he came out that very hour. — Acts 16:18 NKJV
Then they went out to see what had happened, and came to Jesus, and found the man from whom the demons had departed, sitting at the feet of Jesus, clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid. — Luke 8:35 NKJV
2. PROTECT.
The blood still works!! Deploy it against the enemy. You can also pray for a hedge and firewall of protection to surround you and your loved ones.
“And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony...” — Revelation 12:11 NKJV
having canceled the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. — Colossians 2:14 NASB2020
But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, to an innumerable company of angels, to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are registered in heaven, to God the Judge of all, to the spirits of just men made perfect, to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling that speaks better things than that of Abel. — Hebrews 12:22-24 NKJV
“For I,” says the Lord, “will be a wall of fire all around her, and I will be the glory in her midst.” — Zechariah 2:5 NKJV
“Have You not made a hedge around him, around his household, and around all that he has on every side?” — Job 1:10a NKJV
“You have hedged me behind and before, And laid Your hand upon me.” — Psalms 139:5 NKJV
3. ANOINT.
Get some anointing oil and anoint your home inside and out. Be sure to focus on these particular places:
Doorways/Thresholds
Windows
Mirrors* (MAY be monitoring devices)
Air Vents (if you feel so led)
Electronics* (phones, tablets, TVs, laptops, etc.
All of these are gateways. Also, anoint:
The doorposts (outside)
The gateposts (if you have them and if so led)
The land itself (this can serve as a holy altar; pour it out like a drink offering; you don’t need to go around the whole property unless so led. Olive oil is expensive! 🤣)
“And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing.” — Isaiah 10:27 KJV
“And you shall take the anointing oil, and anoint the tabernacle and all that is in it; and you shall hallow it and all its utensils, and it shall be holy.” — Exodus 40:9 NKJV
“Also Moses took the anointing oil, and anointed the tabernacle and all that was in it, and consecrated them.” — Leviticus 8:10 NKJV
And they cast out many demons, and anointed with oil many who were sick, and healed them. — Mark 6:13 NKJV
Regarding Salt
I know some ministers who employ salt in a similar context they would apply oil. I do not have a Scriptural understanding (haven’t researched it in depth) or revelation of salt or the salt covenant as it pertains to *New Covenant Believers,* so I personally steer clear of it. There is no need to salt your home or land—UNLESS HOLY SPIRIT is specifically leading you to do a prophetic demonstration or other spiritual act.
Also, be advised that while I personally do not understand the role of literal salt in a Christian’s spiritual life, I do know for a fact that witchcraft and witchcraft superstitions regularly employ salt for protection and in their other rituals such as drawing magick circles. In fact, a prophet recently saw a woman in the realm of the spirit putting down salt on my property against me! I would implore you to steer clear of the use of salt (spiritually speaking) without specific authorization from Holy Spirit. We don’t need you doing witchcraft by accident out of zeal or a lack of wisdom, and thus, bringing an accusation that will testify against you in the Courts of Heaven.
And feel free to research salt and the salt covenant in Scripture.
Please also understand that we don’t do rituals in Christianity. We give room for prophetic demonstrations such as anointing ourselves and our homes, yet we DO NOT create rituals out of these acts. They are merely symbols; prophetic demonstrations of our faith. Our Christianity or spiritual maturity does not hinge upon them.
Anointing oil DOES NOT cast out demons. It’s simply a prophetic demonstration of what the Spirit of the Lord can do to protect and deliver His people as well as destroy the devices of the enemy against us.
COMMUNION
Communion—another phenomenal prophetic demonstration that can be repeated as often as you choose (1 Cor. 11:23-32)—is NOT a ritual, yet a symbol of our relationship with Christ that can produce healing and deliverance when done decently and in order. We understand that transubstantiation is not, in fact, true meaning that the wine (juice) DOES NOT become the Blood of Jesus and the bread DOES NOT become the Body of Jesus, yet they are symbols of the Blood and Body of Christ.
4. Eradicate.
After you have warred, protected your home, and anointed your home, be sure to prayerfully go through your house and get rid of and or destroy anything that serves as a demonic point-of-contact.
Point-of-Contact - any object consecrated to or hijacked for supernatural purposes that allows the flow of power from one person to another person or entity causing supernatural power to be manifested in the life of the owner; any item belonging to or gifted from a (former) romantic interest or paramour that emotionally binds you to them or reminds you of your connection to them; a pet, friend/connection, family member, or even a child that you share with an ex that can be the source of consternation and vexation to you such as one co-parent using their child to torment their co-parent.
Points-of-contact can be wonderful or terrible. For the apostle Paul, the handkerchiefs he wore that were divided and distributed, healing and deliverance was the result of those happy objects (Acts 19:11-12). However, if the P.O.C.s are demonic, they can produce demonic exchanges that negatively affect the atmosphere of your home, your mental/emotional stability, your finances, your career/ministry, your relationships/connections, your reproductive health, your overall health, and even your life. These items can represent Many people under witchcraft attacks can trace the origin of the vexation back to when they either purchased, received, or discovered an item in their belongings.
These items may have been intentionally or innocently given to you. You may have purchased them without knowing anything was wrong with them. Some of you may even have things hidden or buried in your home or on your property.
Accursed Objects
Family heirlooms, gifts, purchases, random finds…whatever it is, if it is plainly Occultic/evil in nature, immoral, or it simply does not settle in your spirit, destroy it or get rid of it. Burn it by fire if you can, but whatever you do, get it off your property and into a place (and state) where no one else can use it again. DO NOT under any circumstances donate it, gift it, or sell it. These items may include Occultic paraphernalia (i.e. grimoires, magick books, crystals, demonic candles, idols, dream catchers, talismans, potions, palo santo, cauldrons, Halloween paraphernalia, etc.), drugs, Masonic rings, fraternity/sorority paraphernalia, etc.
Familiar Objects
A dearly departed loved one’s ashes or belongings MAY be a stronghold FOR YOU. This may also largely depend on the nature of the relationship you had while they were alive. YOU DO NOT AT ALL have to rush to eradicate your loved one’s things. NO ONE should rush your grief process. It’s YOURS. And you can most certainly keep some of their things to remember them by, yet you should not have a shrine to the dead in your home such as a literal shrine or a room that is left untouched for years and years to come.
Sentimental Objects
If it is not an evil object, yet simply a sentimental object such as a sweater, book, or bracelet from an ex, then free to sell it, gift it, or donate it. It’s not bad, it just symbolizes the soul-tie FOR YOU.
Promise, engagement, and wedding rings I leave up to your Holy Ghost discretion. Just be rid of it and be mindful that rings especially for romantic purposes represent covenant. Consider if this is something you truly want a refund on or that you feel comfortable passing on to another hopeful human being.
More disturbingly, sentimental items may actually represent your ties, not just to a human, but also to a spirit-spouse. It may even be an heirloom item. Whatever it is, it MAY actually strengthen your marriage covenant to your spirit-spouse if you have one, so you’ll want to give away or potentially even destroy those items for sure as well depending on what they are.
Sexplicit Objects
Pornography represents both the worst of evil/unclean objects and soul-ties. Whether it’s third-party porn or NSFW pix/vids you shared with an ex, you’ll want to destroy it, no question. Any sexually immoral or demonic items such as a Kamasutra, masturbation aids (I’m looking at you, single folks!), fetish items, lingerie from past immoral relationships or marriages, etc. should be promptly destroyed as well.
Religious Objects
If you left a ministry that turned out to be toxic, controlling/cultish/jezebelic, etc., then you’ll definitely want to get rid of EVERYTHING they gave you or that you received/purchased from them. Sermons, books, music, gifts, paraphernalia—everything. Do not gift it. Do not donate it. Just destroy it.
This also includes ordination papers and any certificates of any kind. GOD confers the calling; not man. Man can only confirm what Heaven has already conferred. If God truly said it, a legitimate source can reconfirm it at a later time.
You should also prayerfully consider cutting ties with and blocking (if only temporarily) the leaders and members of the church as well. They may be operating as flying monkeys, spying on you and reporting back—whether they realise it or not. And depending on the spirits operating through the leadership, there could be attempted astral-projections, divination, word curses, and other forms of evangelical/pentecostal/charismatic witchcraft released against you. All of these items/beings also represent soul ties and unclean impartations.
Live Beings
Living breathing beings such as pets and children obviously cannot be abandoned, killed, or passed through the fire LOL. If it’s a pet and it’s causing serious issues and prayer doesn’t seem to be working, then you may want to consider giving it away to a loving home or a no-kill shelter if you don’t have any better options.
If it’s a child under your custody, then you can pray to sever the demonic ties between them and their other parent who is using the child as a means to vex you. With all other humans, pray about what boundaries Holy Spirit would have you put in place. Some you may have to cut off entirely.
MANY of the objects listed in this section can also double as monitoring devices. It can provide the evil party with a means to locate and spy on you visibly or audibly through divination. This is especially true if the P.O.C. came from someone you were sexually or romantically involved who was also involved in the Occult. It may allow them access to curse you, remotely view you, astral-project against you, or even attack you or the other occupants of your home. The P.O.C.s are the cause allowing the curses to alight and prosper against you (Prov. 26:2). ERADICATE THEM!
Sometimes you yourself are the P.O.C. because you haven’t been through deliverance yet. Your spirit and or soul are still in agreement with the unclean party, pulling on them; your familiar spirits are calling out to their familiar spirits. Don’t jump in the dumpster or the fire, but PLEASE schedule deliverance TODAY!
RAISING AN ALTAR ON YOUR PROPERTY
If you have familiars encroaching on your property, then you can bet your bottom dollar that there is an evil altar and a witch maintaining that altar behind it. This means that you should be raising up a holy altar on your property. This is also something that should be a staple in the life of every Believer. Below is a spiritually neutral definition of an altar.
Altar - a place consecrated by a priest to their spirit or deity of choice; a portal allowing supernatural visitation (transportation, translation) and demonstration that is maintained through continual sacrifice.
You raise and maintain an altar through:
Prayer
Time in the Word (and listening to the Word)
Praise & Worship
Sacrificial Giving
Anointing with Oil
Prayer
Then the Lord appeared to Solomon by night, and said to him: “I have heard your prayer, and have chosen this place for Myself as a house of sacrifice. When I shut up heaven and there is no rain, or command the locusts to devour the land, or send pestilence among My people, if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to prayer made in this place. For now I have chosen and sanctified this house, that My name may be there forever; and My eyes and My heart will be there perpetually. As for you, if you walk before Me as your father David walked, and do according to all that I have commanded you, and if you keep My statutes and My judgments, then I will establish the throne of your kingdom, as I covenanted with David your father, saying, ‘You shall not fail to have a man as ruler in Israel.’” — II Chronicles 7:12-18 NKJV (see Chapters 6 & 7 for context)

Time in the Word
“This God—his way is perfect;
the word of the Lord proves true;
he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.”

After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.” — Genesis 15:1 NKJV
“So now, brethren, I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and give you an inheritance among all those who are sanctified.” — Acts 20:32 NKJV
Praise & Worship

Sacrificial Seeds
No altar is complete without a sacrifice. This is where offerings and anointing oil (and potentially drink offerings) come into play. While anointing with oil is an act of consecration (see above and below), it’s also a costly gift that can be categorized as an offering.
Under the New Covenant, Jesus is the Lamb slain before the foundation of the world (Rev. 13:8), so we don’t ritually sacrifice animals anymore. As I always say, if I find out you’re doing this, I’m calling the cops AND animal control on you because you’re a witch who’s harming animals! LOL
Instead, we sacrificially give. Whether it’s tithes and offerings to our local church, a seed to a minister/ministry that’s blessed us, or alms to those in need, your seed will not only speak for you in the Courts of Heaven, but it establishes a heavenly portal or “open heaven” over your life and potentially, over your property.
“Bring all the tithes into the storehouse,
That there may be food in My house,
And try Me now in this,”
Says the Lord of hosts,
“If I will not open for you the windows of heaven
And pour out for you such blessing
That there will not be room enough to receive it.
“And I will rebuke the devourer for your sakes,
So that he will not destroy the fruit of your ground,
Nor shall the vine fail to bear fruit for you in the field,”
Says the Lord of hosts…

“There was a certain man in Caesarea called Cornelius, a centurion of what was called the Italian Regiment, a devout man and one who feared God with all his household, who gave alms generously to the people, and prayed to God always. About the ninth hour of the day he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God coming in and saying to him, “Cornelius!”
And when he observed him, he was afraid, and said, “What is it, Lord?”
So he said to him, “Your prayers and your alms have come up for a memorial before God.” — Acts 10:1-4 NKJV
Abraham established an altar at Luz which he renamed as Bethel. God visited him there and he sacrificed to the Lord.
“Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your descendants I will give this land.” And there he built an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him. And he moved from there to the mountain east of Bethel, and he pitched his tent with Bethel on the west and Ai on the east; there he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.” — Genesis 12:7-8 NKJV
Two generations later, Jacob slept there and the Lord opened his spiritual eyes to see the heavenly portal his grandfather had established. Jacob chose to maintain this portal through his tithes, sacrifices, and anointing (oil).
“I am the God of Bethel, where you anointed the pillar and where you made a vow to Me. Now arise, get out of this land, and return to the land of your family.” — Genesis 31:13 NKJV
Then God appeared to Jacob again, when he came from Padan Aram, and blessed him…. Then God went up from him in the place where He talked with him. So Jacob set up a pillar in the place where He talked with him, a pillar of stone; and he poured a drink offering on it, and he poured oil on it. And Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him, Bethel. — Genesis 35:9, 13-15 NKJV
Bethel means House of God and was also known as the Gate of Heaven. And it’s very close to what would later be known as Jerusalem and established as a mighty heavenly portal. Gates indicate portals: places of traffic between the spirit realm and the natural realm.
Now Jacob went out from Beersheba and went toward Haran. So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.…
Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I did not know it.” And he was afraid and said, “How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven!”
Then Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put at his head, set it up as a pillar, and poured oil on top of it. And he called the name of that place Bethel; but the name of that city had been Luz previously. Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me, and keep me in this way that I am going, and give me bread to eat and clothing to put on, so that I come back to my father’s house in peace, then the Lord shall be my God. And this stone which I have set as a pillar shall be God’s house, and of all that You give me I will surely give a tenth to You.” — Genesis 28:10-12, 16-22 NKJV
When an altar is properly maintained by the priest, the deity that altar is dedicated to not only visits, but releases blessings, protection, and answered prayers. This is demonic and potentially deadly, of course, if it is a witchcraft/idolatrous altar, yet it is a tremendous blessing to those of the Royal Priesthood of God! Just ask Obed-Edom (II Samuel 6:10-12)!
Anointing with Oil
“And you shall make from these a holy anointing oil, an ointment compounded according to the art of the perfumer. It shall be a holy anointing oil. With it you shall anoint the tabernacle of meeting and the ark of the Testimony; the table and all its utensils, the lampstand and its utensils, and the altar of incense; the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the laver and its base. You shall consecrate them, that they may be most holy; whatever touches them must be holy.” — Exodus 30:25-29 NKJV
Every altar must be consecrated. Abraham and Jacob did this at Bethel. Moses did this in the Tabernacle. This is even [part of] why we anoint ourselves as Believers—because we are living, breathing tabernacles for Christ…just as witches are living, breathing tabernacles for their false gods.
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. — Romans 12:1 NKJV
Do you not know that you are the temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? If anyone defiles the temple of God, God will destroy him. For the temple of God is holy, which temple you are. — I Corinthians 3:16-17 NKJV
