What Is the Purpose of Nephilim?

What Is the Purpose of Nephilim?

The purpose of giants (Nephilim) is twofold. The surface purpose of giants is to be destructive, specifically toward humanity. Authentic giants attack, murder, and annihilate humanity. This was one massive reason for the Flood. Yes, as the Word says,

Then the Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. So the Lord said, “I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.” ― Genesis 6:5-7

Yet the destruction of man by these Nephilim who were “on the earth in those days, and also afterward” (v. 3) was also a massive reason for the destruction of all forms of life from the face of the earth. This at least gave humanity, preserved through Noah and his family, the chance to be fruitful and multiply in safety before the Nephilim began to repopulate themselves on the earth. Yet before and after the Flood, the giants were destructive toward the inhabitants of the earth.

Haters of Humanity

Now this posterity of Seth continued to esteem God as the Lord of the universe, and to have an entire regard to virtue, for seven generations; but in process of time they were perverted, and forsook the practices of their forefathers; and did neither pay those honors to God which were appointed them, nor had they any concern to do justice towards men. But for what degree of zeal they had formerly shown for virtue, they now showed by their actions a double degree of wickedness, whereby they made God to be their enemy. For many angels of God accompanied with women, and begat sons that proved unjust, and despisers of all that was good, on account of the confidence they had in their own strength; for the tradition is, that these men did what resembled the acts of those whom the Grecians call giants. But Noah was very uneasy at what they did; and being displeased at their conduct, persuaded them to change their dispositions and their acts for the better: but seeing they did not yield to him, but were slaves to their wicked pleasures, he was afraid they would kill him, together with his wife and children, and those they had married; so he departed out of that land. ― Antiquities of the Jews, Book I, Chapter 3, Paragraph 1

And it came to pass when the children of men had multiplied that in those days were born unto them beautiful and comely daughters. And the angels, the children of the heaven, saw and lusted after them, and said to one another: 'Come, let us choose us wives from among the children of men and beget us children.' And Semjaza, who was their leader, said unto them: 'I fear ye will not indeed agree to do this deed, and I alone shall have to pay the penalty of a great sin.' And they all answered him and said: 'Let us all swear an oath, and all bind ourselves by mutual imprecations not to abandon this plan but to do this thing.' Then sware they all together and bound themselves by mutual imprecations upon it. And they were in all two hundred; who descended in the days of Jared on the summit of Mount Hermon, and they called it Mount Hermon, because they had sworn and bound themselves by mutual imprecations upon it. And these are the names of their leaders: Samlazaz, their leader, Araklba, Rameel, Kokablel, Tamlel, Ramlel, Danel, Ezeqeel, Baraqijal, Asael, Armaros, Batarel, Ananel, Zaqiel, Samsapeel, Satarel, Turel, Jomjael, Sariel. These are their chiefs of tens.

And all the others together with them took unto themselves wives, and each chose for himself one, and they began to go in unto them and to defile themselves with them, and they taught them charms and enchantments, and the cutting of roots, and made them acquainted with plants. And they became pregnant, and they bare great giants, whose height was three thousand ells: Who consumed all the acquisitions of men. And when men could no longer sustain them, the giants turned against them and devoured mankind. And they began to sin against birds, and beasts, and reptiles, and fish, and to devour one another's flesh, and drink the blood. Then the earth laid accusation against the lawless ones.

― Book of Enoch, Section I, Chapters 6-7

It is no surprise that when fallen beings created a spiritually illegal race of beings that the offspring created would be fallen was well. Not only were these beings accursed, but they took their hatred out on humanity in general. You could call this a type of jealousy. The fathers of the giants were everlastingly accursed, bound in everlasting chains of judgment with no reprieve.

And the angels who did not keep their proper domain, but left their own abode, He has reserved in everlasting chains under darkness for the judgment of the great day…

― Jude 1:6; see also II Peter 2:4

“God committed the care of men and all things under heaven to angels who he appointed over them. But the angels transgressed this appointment, and were captivated by the love of women, and begat children who were of those that are called demons; and besides, they afterwards subdued the human race to themselves, partly by teaching them to offer sacrifices, and incense and libations, of which they stood in need of after they were enslaved by lustful passions; and among them they sowed murders, wars, adulteries, intemperate deeds, and all wickedness. Whence also the poets and mythologists not knowing that it was the angels and those demons whom had been begotten by them did these things to men, and women, and cities, and nations which they related, ascribed them to god himself, and to the offspring of those who were called brothers, Neptune and Pluto, and to the children again of these their offspring. For whatever name each of the angels had given himself and his children, by that name they were called.”

― The Writings of Justin Martyr, Book 1, pg. 190, “How the Angels Transgressed”

The fallen ones begotten of fallen angels felled the men of the earth with great wrath. Very literally hell bent on destruction, these monsters terrorized all those who were not in league with them. Genesis 6:3 allows us to see that it was the wickedness of man that made space for this unforeseen greater wickedness to take place in the earth.

Haters of God’s People

Not only did the giants hate humanity in general, but they had a special hatred of God’s people. The Rephaim (Nephilim) tribes of Canaan were positioned at the gates of the land, a demonic strategy meant to intimidate God’s chosen people out of taking what was rightfully theirs as the earthly seed of Abraham. We see these giants infesting the land of Israel again in the days of Saul and David. Thankfully, David and his Gibborim (Mighty Men) wiped the giants out of the land of Israel.

Now the Philistines gathered their armies together to battle, and were gathered at Sochoh, which belongs to Judah; they encamped between Sochoh and Azekah, in Ephes Dammim. And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered together, and they encamped in the Valley of Elah, and drew up in battle array against the Philistines. The Philistines stood on a mountain on one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side, with a valley between them.

And a champion went out from the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath, from Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. He had a bronze helmet on his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail, and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of bronze. And he had bronze armor on his legs and a bronze javelin between his shoulders. Now the staff of his spear was like a weaver’s beam, and his iron spearhead weighed six hundred shekels; and a shield-bearer went before him. Then he stood and cried out to the armies of Israel, and said to them, “Why have you come out to line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and you the servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me. If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and serve us.” And the Philistine said, “I defy the armies of Israel this day; give me a man, that we may fight together.” When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid….

Then as he talked with them, there was the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, coming up from the armies of the Philistines; and he spoke according to the same words. So David heard them. ― I Samuel 17:1-11, 23

When the Philistines were at war again with Israel, David and his servants with him went down and fought against the Philistines; and David grew faint. Then Ishbi-Benob, who was one of the sons of the giant, the weight of whose bronze spear was three hundred shekels, who was bearing a new sword, thought he could kill David. But Abishai the son of Zeruiah came to his aid, and struck the Philistine and killed him. Then the men of David swore to him, saying, “You shall go out no more with us to battle, lest you quench the lamp of Israel.”

Now it happened afterward that there was again a battle with the Philistines at Gob. Then Sibbechai the Hushathite killed Saph, who was one of the sons of the giant. Again there was war at Gob with the Philistines, where Elhanan the son of Jaare-Oregim the Bethlehemite killed the brother of Goliath the Gittite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver’s beam.

Yet again there was war at Gath, where there was a man of great stature, who had six fingers on each hand and six toes on each foot, twenty-four in number; and he also was born to the giant. So when he defied Israel, Jonathan the son of Shimea, David’s brother, killed him.

These four were born to the giant in Gath, and fell by the hand of David and by the hand of his servants. ― I Samuel 21:15-22; see also I Chronicles 20:4-8

The Nephilim tribes of Canaan thought they could prevent God’s people from entering the land, and then thought they could conquer them afterward. But they were all of them deceived...and destroyed.

Removing the Male Seed

If you’ve watched the movie Braveheart or are familiar with Scottish history, then you may recall the English rule of Prima Nocta meaning first night. This law consists of a ruler or nobleman such as a king, duke, or earl - any feudal lord - being able to have sex with any female subject, in particular on her wedding night. In the movie, King Edward I (also known as “Longshanks”) said, “If we can’t get them out, we’ll breed them out.” The idea was to steadily destroy the Scottish way of life and the Scots themselves by breeding pseudo-English overlords instead of proud Scotsmen and women. Afterall, a child sired by an English nobleman was more likely to be compliant to English rule than a true Scotsman by birth.

Now, let us recall the story of the ever-increasing populace of Israelites in Goshen, a province of Egypt. They started off as a party of 70 persons and grew into an “exceedingly mighty” people. When a Pharaoh who didn’t know Joseph came to power, he feared the size of the Israelite people and what they might do if war arose from a nearby power. So in an act of dread and cunning, he enslaved the Israelites for 430 years. And yet, as the Bible says, “But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew,” (Exo. 1:12). Seeing this, Pharaoh implemented a new rule:

Then the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of one was Shiphrah and the name of the other Puah; and he said, “When you do the duties of a midwife for the Hebrew women, and see them on the birthstools, if it is a son, then you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.” ― Exodus 1:15-16

When the Pharaoh saw that the midwives feared God more than him, the Lord blessed them and gave them their own families. However, Pharaoh was not to be deterred.

So Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, “Every son who is born you shall cast into the river, and every daughter you shall save alive.” ― Exodus 1:22

Kill the male children, allow the female children to live. If the male children are killed off, then the future generations will not be able to replace the generations before them. The Israelite problem would go from being contained to being eradicated. Now, what does this have to do with the subject of Nephilim? Glad you asked.

Note these two points:

  1. The Nephilim were sired into existence. (Angelic fathers, human mothers).

  2. The Nephilim were male.

Fallen angels sired the Nephilim into existence. In other words, the Y chromosome came from the fallen angels, while the X chromosome came from their human mothers. So if the fallen angels and their sons after them claimed wives for themselves and sired children through them, then those were women who were not married to human men and gave birth to children sired by the non-humans.

Next, if the Nephilim born to the fallen angels and women were male―no females among them―then that means they had the ability to continue siring more Nephilim with more human women.

In short, they were breeding out human beings.

The Flood wiped the Nephilim out and gave humanity a clean slate, but the fallen angels came back as did their demon-spawn.

Evil Monsters/Monstrosities

I will reiterate here that not only were the Nephilim monstrous in nature, but also in appearance. They HATED humanity. Every ancient society tells stories of vengeful, hateful, marauding giants. My personal belief is that whenever every culture has a universal story, it is because it stems from a universal truth. We know that every culture has their own version of Noah’s Flood. We know every culture has their own version of the fallen angels coming down to earth. In the same way, the Greeks, the Romans, the Celts, the Germanics, and more all have their own stories of giants. There must be some common truth. And we know this because Scripture tells us this.

― Book of Enoch, Section I, Chapters 7

“The depravity of mankind, which began to show itself in the time of Enosh, had increased monstrously in the time of his grandson Jared by reason of the fallen angels. When the angels saw the beautiful, attractive daughters of men, they lusted after them and begat children with them. Giants begotten by the flesh and spirits will be called evil spirits on earth, and on earth will be their dwelling place. Evil spirits will proceed from their bodies, because they were created from above, and from the holy watchers is their beginning primal origin; they will be evil spirits on the earth, and evil spirits they will be named. And the spirits of heaven have their dwelling in heaven, but the spirits of earth, which were born upon earth, have their dwelling upon the earth. And the spirits of giants will devour, oppress, destroy, attack, and do battle and cause destruction on the earth and work affliction… they will be invisible. And these spirits shall raise up against the children of men and against women, because they have proceeded from them, thus they will destroy until the day which the consummation of the great world be consummated…”

Giants hate humans. Period. Point blank. Nothing born of hell can love what is born of Heaven.
